Seydou Keïta: Mid-Century
Modern
The Wedge Gallery was proud to showcase the work of Seydou Keïta as part
of Contact 2000, Toronto's annual photography festival.
The show ran from May 7th to the 31st.This was the first exhibition of this
artist’s work in Canada.
"The thousands of portraits that Seydou Keïta took form an outstanding
record of Malian (West African) society between the end of the Forties and
the early Sixties. His photographs have become - in addition to their sociological
value - works of art, free from tricks, eccentricity, or any attempt at illusion.
Through his quest for accuracy, Keïta seems intuitively to have reinvented
the art of the portrait."
