BECOMING: Photographs from the Wedge Collection

BECOMING: Photographs from the Wedge Collection features over 60 contemporary and historical photographic works by 38 artists, exploring the creation and assertion of identity through portraiture. Our first venue was the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit (MOCAD). Programming included a lecture and a weekend youth photography workshop led by Wedge artist Jamel Shabazz. Jamel introduced a small group of high school kids in the Detroit area to the exploratory possibilities basic photography can offer, focusing on their personal visions and community issues. These photos were subsequently displayed as a mini-exhibition in conjunction with our show.

Accompanied by an essay by Canadian curator and art scholar Pamela Edmonds, the exhibit drew increased attendance to MOCAD and enjoyed excellent reviews!
