BECOMING: Photographs from the Wedge Collection features over 60 contemporary and historical photographic works by 38 artists, exploring the creation and assertion of identity through portraiture. Our first venue was the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit (MOCAD). Programming included a lecture and a weekend youth photography workshop led by Wedge artist Jamel Shabazz. Jamel introduced a small group of high school kids in the Detroit area to the exploratory possibilities basic photography can offer, focusing on their personal visions and community issues. These photos were subsequently displayed as a mini-exhibition in conjunction with our show.

Most Surprising Curatorial Encounter

Head Room, a little show within a show at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto this fall, revealed the talent of a lesser-known treasure: Kenneth Montague, a practising dentist and art collector who also makes hip exhibitions here and there under the banner Wedge Curatorial Projects. At MoCCA, he inventively brought together photographs by black artists from his collection with found objects (a wooden painted hair salon sign from Togo, a shopping bag from Cape Town), exploring the elaborate hair braiding and styling practices prevalent in black culture. -S.M.
