Most Surprising Curatorial Encounter
Head Room, a little show within a show at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto this fall, revealed the talent of a lesser-known treasure: Kenneth Montague, a practising dentist and art collector who also makes hip exhibitions here and there under the banner Wedge Curatorial Projects. At MoCCA, he inventively brought together photographs by black artists from his collection with found objects (a wooden painted hair salon sign from Togo, a shopping bag from Cape Town), exploring the elaborate hair braiding and styling practices prevalent in black culture. -S.M.
